Available in hardback as a sailor's reference and a companion to the working charts, the Cruising Guide to the New England Coast is made from durable materials and made to withstand the rigors of a journey at sea. But, it is still a good read when ashore. Besides details of navigation, anchorage areas and marina information it brings a breadth of recreational detail, and an understanding of the area's history and local color from the point of view of someone who has been there and knows the place well. No one planning a trip through the waters of New England should be without a recent copy of The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast. The Guide, first published in 1936 by Robert F. Duncan and Fessenden Blanchard. Both were sailors and knew the New England waters extensively. It was created as a reference to their colleagues and club mates. The book became popular and grew steadily in size, readership and precision over the first four editions. In 1961, the authors passed the book over to Roger F. Duncan and John P. Ware, their son and son-in-law respectively. Duncan and Ware, as The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast came to be known, provided a resourceful, readable reference for people who enjoyed cruising the lovely coast of New England. In 1993, for the eleventh edition, W. Wallace Fenn, Roger F. Duncan's first cousin, and Paul W. Fenn, Wallace's son, joined the team. Their contributions detailed the coastline from Cape Cod to New York City. The twelfth edition was published in 2002. Robert C. Duncan and Roger S. Duncan, grandson and great-grandson respectively of the original author, took over the work of Roger F. Duncan and John P. Ware and joined the Fenns to produce a multi-generational edition which comprised more complete and detailed information than had ever been compiled before. The 12th edition is a compilation of the efforts of four generations and countless contributors, correspondences and cruises. We do not accept advertising. Information included is compiled through the observations and experiences of the authors and generous accounts donated by fellow sailors. We highly encourage correspondence and hope that sailors near and far will both use our book and correspond with us by letter or email with information for review and potential inclusion into future editions. The book exists because people use it and like it year after year. The intent of the book is to provide a reasonable amount of knowledge to the cruising sailor on what to expect in any given location. As authors, we take responsibility for our opinions and confirm that the accounts given to us by others are fair and accurate. No part of our book is intended to help or harm any business, locale, entity or person. Our opinions are our own and we seek to provide good information which will lead to a safe and fun cruising experience for our readers. There is no other book which covers this range of territory as accurately, broadly and in as proud a style as The Cruising Guide to the New England Coast. It has been and continues to be a tool which every yacht should have as part of her reference bookshelf. |
